Placing God in the Story
A few days ago, a momentary panic washed over me. That panic centered around the expenses of the season. Probably many of you reading this, experience the same thing. A whiff of financial angst is an annual rite of Christmas!
Yet God’s will is to be placed very differently in the Christmas story. It is to be a new song, outside of the worries and anxieties of our temporal world.
The new song is a bold assertion, innocently declaring that the God of the gospel has plans and purposes and a will to reorder the world, to bring wholeness and health to the blind, the poor, the needy, to quell fear, and to remake the entirety of creation. The song asserts God’s future against our present tense. Walter Brueggemann
I think most of us have the faint sense that Christmas should echo these words, that Christmas should be something more. We harbor a “nudge” as it were, that maybe this year, maybe this time around we will “get it.”
In our world of goals and planning, unfortunately the spiritual life plays by different rules, holding time in a much larger measure. We are “getting it.” God is at work in this season in our hearts. Opening. Cherishing. Being born anew!
