We Do Care

Friday, November 19th, 2010

We do care.  People tend to have a deeply seeded sense of love and compassion.  Deep within, all of us – ALL of us -  lies a divine spark, a God given piece that remains with us through all eternity.  That piece reflects God – a God that, “… has compassion on everybody, loves everyone, and wishes to make everyone eternally happy.” (Heavenly Secrets, # 904).

Aligning our lives with that love is where challenges arise.  Likewise, when we do it, it is where life most breaks open.  I most enjoyed a TED talk by Jessica Jackley as she spoke about her journey from the Sunday School lessons of taking care of the poor to something far deeper – organized steps to do that in a way that aligned love and money.  She definitely lives that “spark”!

What she learned in the process of organizing her non-profit, Kiva, is that we do care and we do love.  Fear keeps many of us from always living into that care and love – fear of failure, fear of doing it wrong, fear of being taken advantage of.  What moves us through that fear are stories.

Stories – a point so true.  We thrive on stories.  As Rachel Naomi Remen noted in an NPR interview – at times we need them more than food.  Watching God settle into peoples’ souls, including mine, is known by story.  There is no other experience of it, no other communication of it.  And those stories move us beyond fear.  The fact is there are mechanics of growing a church, a church focused on service.  There are budgets, perspectives that at times challenge, projections not met, personality clashes – aka “the mess” that is life.  And there are the stories.  Stories upon story that speaks to the need to reach out, to connect, to find meaning.  The best of those are the ones that pull us in and then push us out.

Is it possble to live an “unsurrendered” life as a Christian?

The short answer – no.

A remarkable piece of Christianity is the concept that we must surrender our lives up. It is a surrendering however to God in a way that helps us to uncover our true selves.

It is so easy though to play with faith. We live in a culture that worships the individual. And of course, that is a source of strength in many instances – loosing ourselves to a “system” is Orwellian.

But there are limits. As Tutu said, thankfully there really is not a “self-made man.” We are where we are by the grace of others and the grace of God. None of us got here “alone.”

A hope – that Christianity rediscovers its heart. We have played such games with faith. Games that include the view of a Church as a club, as a “golden ticket.”

Martin Luther nailed his 95 thesis to the door to protest the Pope’s use of indulgences. Emanuel Swedenborg, the New Church’s Martin Luther, figuratively nailed progressive Christian principles to the door of the Protestant Church to protest the concept of salvation by faith alone. Faith needs trust, compassion, kindness, service to be real. It is far more than belief.

Recapturing the heart requires surrender.

We work on the church so the church can work on us

So many thoughts going through my head up the upcoming NewChurch LIVE Anniversary Service.

What do I hope to communicate?

  1. God has given us a vision for this Church
  2. That vision really matters
  3. It is a vision we can only accomplish by partnering with Him and others with an eye to service
  4. Vision demands sacrifice.
  5. There comes a point in time when we need to step in in a new way
  6. Not an “old” church model of conversion but a “new” church model of engagement.  Full engagement – that is the new way.
  7. What are you willing to sacrifice to engage in that vision?

Four Years Go

Sustainable World??? World Peace????

Sometimes when I think about this I feel overwhelmed with the “how??”.  Then, I remember that I don’t need to figure it all out, or do it on my own.  I forget sometimes that I am connected to the rest of the human race!  “Four Years Go” is a great reminder that I don’t need to move mountains on my own. I just need to remember that if I pay attention, I can see really easy ways to contribute to reaching these goals – in community with other people.  I just have to stay awake to it.

This being Earth week and all, I thought it was a great time to remind myself that we have an chance to join together – in action and conversation. The world is changing, the human race is evolving. Do I want to be awake for it?
