Final Thoughts About Gangs and False Self

Friday, June 4th, 2010

The final message of the 3 part, Self vs. God, is posted.

A few final thoughts …

  1. Acting Justly, Loving Mercy, Walking Humbly – thank you God for making a simple list for a complex world!
  2. False Self:  I played with a change in language.  Picture allowing yourself to be lowered down into your true self, your God given self, the self God intends.  The language flip is that maybe a part of that is flipping from “shunning evils” to “shedding evils.”  If we shed the bad stuff, in a way similar to the former gang members shedding their tattoos, we are skinny enough to fit into our true selves.
  3. “I am somebody.”  That line from the video we saw still gets me choked up!  All that journey and the young man says in that deeply profound voice “I am somebody.”  His emotion around those words carried the series for me.

So in the end, I really enjoyed the series.  I appreciate everyone who took part and who helped pull it off.  I deeply honor the work of Father Gregory Boyle and Homeboy Industries.

You are warmly invited to share any thoughts you might have.
